Choices We Make

It’s your choice.  Use your frying pan to fry worms and larvae for dinner or fry a fish for dinner?  Read on to discover my choice and why.

It’s a difficult task, but I have accepted the challenge to learn to fish. After all, we have boys; they need to know how to fish. Therefore, I signed the boys up to a fishing workshop.  A workshop where a parent must attend.  On the final training day, they were able to fish in a small, private pond.  It was my job, as the attending parent, to put the live bait on the hooks.  During the first day of the workshop, we talked about lures in detail, not live bait.  Not sure what I was thinking, but I thought we were using lures.  We were not.

The thought of the worms and grubs was daunting—but, when I asked myself, “If I had the choice to eat worms and beetle larvae or use the worms and larvae to catch a fish?” The choice to hook the worm and wiggling larvae was an outstaniding success. I’ll eat fish.

And, I didn’t worry about not having sanitizing wipes. How I got past this? For one thing, I’m not a germaphobe. (There were some men worried about this. That’s the only reason I thought about it.) My thought…“Hey, ‘real’ fishermen, like back in the day, didn’t cry over not having soap and water to wash the worm guts and dirt covered hands.” Therefore, neither am I. Wipe those hands on my jeans and carry on boys. Carry on. We got this. It’s all good.

We did alright fishing.  In the end, Trevor caught the big bass with a little help from a pro.  He then continued his adventure by collecting walnuts and recruiting other young fishermen/women to his walnut collecting task.  Mason patiently fished with the hopes of catching the ‘big’ one.  Unfortunately, he didn’t even get a bite.  However, he did win the drawing for the “huge fish pillow” from Cabella’s, who sponsored the program providing free fishing poles complete with tackle boxes.  It was a successful day with no tears shed.

  1. Great job on giving them the experience of fishing, a basic principal that every child should experience!

I believe you should give your children as many different experiences, parental memories & family togetherness as possible so that they have lots to draw from as they grow up & lots of positive memories to last a lifetime.

Thank you, Duron. I am looking forward to many more outdoor adventures with the boys. We’re building positive, fun memories. Plus, I get to learn a lot along the way.
